With its 149 institutes in 93 countries and its multimedia online content, the Goethe-Institut provides a social and cultural communication framework to foster creativity, discussion, joint learning experiences and innovative experiments.
It also uses its large international network to communicate important developments and events in other parts of the world back to Germany. Thus it generates added value for the cultural and education sectors both in the host countries and in Germany.
The principles that guide the Goethe-Institut – reciprocity, openness and unwillingness to instrumentalize art for national-political purposes – are the practical lessons learned from the historical experience of imperialism and totalitarism. The requirements and interests of the Goethe-Institut’s partners in the host countries form the starting point for all programmes and offers of co-operation. Language and culture are employed as tools of dialogue.
German on the Road: The Deutsch-Bus in Turkey
The Robert Bosch Stiftung and the Goethe Institute Istanbul are carrying out the “German on the Road: Deutsch-Bus in Turkey” project in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz Turkey, the German Academic Exchange Service, and the Turkish Board of Education.
In this project, a team of young German lectors communicate a contemporary view of Germany to teachers, students, and university lecturers, and show them just how much fun the German language can be. In addition to contests, animated games, and quizzes, they also carry out model German lessons, workshops, and information evenings. Their activities are geared toward students that are already learning German as well as those that are about to choose a second language or their field of study.
During its first six-month trip through Turkey, the Deutsch-Bus covered a distance of 14,000 kilometers, visiting more than 100 schools and universities in 31 different locations. Over 11,000 secondary school and university students participated in the Deutsch-Bus events. The second tour will begin in September 2011 and will last until May 2012.
